On June 28, the subject “Engineering technology development and application of home-made welding material for cryogenic storage tank 9Ni steel” organized by the Project Department of Sinopec passed phasal review, marking the successful development of the home-made welding material for cryogenic storage tank 9Ni steel.

The welding material for cryogenic storage tank 9Ni steel is a high-end product in the petrochemical field, and it has been depended on import over a long time. To promote full localization for LNG storage tanks, Sinopec Guangzhou (Luoyang) Engineering Co., Ltd., jointly with SEI, the Tenth Construction Company and the Fourth Construction Company, carried out massive researches starting from the end of 2022 for the welding material of large LNG tank high nickel steel with a series of tests, and also applied it in trial in the construction of the outer wall panels of the ethylene tanks in Gulei Petrochemical at Zhangzhou of Fujian.

The test results have shown that the home-made welding material for 9Ni steel can effectively shorten the procurement and construction period by 2 to 3 months, and further reduce the cost compared with the imported welding material, with obvious benefits. The expert review group unanimously concluded that the newly developed 9Ni steel electrode and wire is reasonable in process design with stable performance, and the technical indicators are equivalent to those of similar imported products, with some indicators better than those of similar imported products, so they can be applied widely in the construction of LNG cryogenic storage tanks.
