Operation of Azul Refinery in Kuwait, with GPEC Participating in its Construction, Attracted Media Attention

On the eve of the New Year's Day, the Politics, one of the Kuwait local mainstream media, published a special report on the front page and page 11, telling the whole story of the contributions made by the consortium partners of GPEC, TR of Spain and Hanwha of Korea to the full completion and operation of the 31.5MTA Azul Refinery.

Azul Refinery is a key project in connection of China's Belt and Road initiative with Kuwait's National Vision 2035, and also the world largest refinery completed at one time by now. Its construction was started in October 2015, the mechanical completion for the main body of project was realized in December, 2019, and full operation realized in December 2023. GPEC, on behalf of SEG, formed a consortium with the TR of Spain and Hanwha Engineering Company of Korea, to provide EPC service for the 15 production plants and also complete the design of 5 plants including diesel hydrogenation and kerosene hydrogenation; the Fifth Construction Company completed the erection of 6 plants including atmospheric distillation and residue hydrogenation, the Lifting and Transport Company performed the lifting works for all large size equipment in the scope of contract, and the Tenth Construction Company undertook the construction of the wastewater treatment plant.

Now, Azul refinery has been put into full operation, it not only provides nearly 1,000 new jobs in the local area, but has also increased the oil refining capacity of Kuwait by 615,000 barrels a day. In the meantime, the atmospheric residue from the refinery, after hydrogenation, desulfurization and cooling, is directly supplied to the power plant as clean fuel, substantially reducing the SOX/NOX emission from the power plant and effectively protecting the local environment.
